Spot description
The long sand and pebble beach south of Gythio is exposed to several directions. A southerly thermal breeze can start in the afternoon; later, westerlies often bring more chop and small waves. The beach deepens rapidly. Keep marked turtle nests and bathing areas clear.
More spot information
Early morning brings a light S to SW breeze, usually around 8 kn; sometimes SE. Around midday it first eases, then west wind sets in, often reaching 15–20 kn in spring and summer. The lighter morning phase and stronger west-wind session are two different parts of the day.
Usually chop with small waves in west wind; south wind builds more waves. Water deepens quickly. Long beach of sand and small pebbles.
About 2 km south of Gythio, directly below Mavrovouni village; access via the coastal road.
A windsurfing school with rental and lessons and the Ocean Café Bar are on the beach. Meltemi campsite is immediately beside it; more accommodation and tavernas are in Gythio.
Sea turtles nest on the beach; do not enter marked areas. Watch for bathers and allow for rapidly increasing water depth.
