Spot description
The beaches of Xerokampos are remote in southeastern Crete. Westerly to southwesterly conditions can produce chop and small waves along exposed sections. Accounts of the Meltemi airflow vary between beach sections, so they do not support a general wind recommendation. The drive is long; check rocks in the water and a safe return before launching.
More spot information
When the Meltemi is absent, a westerly to southwesterly thermal wind can strengthen to around 20 kn. Strong northerly wind is offshore at this section and is not a suitable alternative. In winter, strong southwesterly wind brings waves.
In westerly to southwesterly thermal wind, the water is usually flat to choppy and suitable for manoeuvres. Winter southwesterly storms build waves for jumping and riding.
Remote spot with a longer approach along a narrow, winding road. Do not assume there is a school, equipment hire or rescue service at the beach.
Conflicting Meltemi reports, including offshore conditions; remote, without a rescue service. Scattered rocks in the water. Do not launch alone.
