Spot description
Waves break at Pigeon Point's outer reef depending on wind and swell. Rare north wind creates a nearshore wave zone within sight of the beach; east to northeast trade wind allows access to a reef section farther out. Wind there is weaker and surf usually one to two metres high.
More spot information
North can activate the nearby Boca wave. In normal east to northeast trade wind a beam reach leads to the outer reef; beyond the reef channel wind is sideshore from the right and weakens with distance from shore.
Exposed reef surf with waist- to chest-high waves near the coast and about one to two metres at the outer reef. The surf zone has enough water over reef; passage follows a narrow channel.
Access begins at the windsurfing area in Pigeon Point Heritage Park. The outer reef is far offshore and has no independent beach access; clarify conditions with Radical Sports before launching.
Radical Sports in the heritage park offers local information, equipment and support. Park admission is paid and the facility has fixed hours.
Ride the outer reef only with very good wave experience and sufficient equipment. Do not head out alone; equipment failure leaves you drifting offshore. Watch reef, coral and decreasing wind strength farther out.
