Spot description
Pachia Ammos lies on the narrow isthmus of Ierapetra on a north-facing coast. North wind hits the beach and can bring onshore waves in winter. A breakwater shelters the western section; east of it lies a more open, rockier shore. Gusty acceleration and currents are possible.
More spot information
Best direction: north. In summer the Meltemi often only reaches about 4 Bft; much stronger conditions with waves can occur in winter. Wind is onshore at the beach; in the narrow gap it can accelerate and become gusty.
Choppy to wavy in north wind; onshore jumping waves develop in winter. The western beach section is more sheltered by a breakwater, the eastern section more open and wavier. Sand and pebble beach with rocky patches in the water.
In Pachia Ammos village on the road between Agios Nikolaos and Ierapetra, at Crete's narrowest part.
Watch for strong, gusty Venturi winds and possible currents. A rock plateau lies in the water in the eastern section; coastal defence blocks and driftwood may occur.
