Spot description
Kefalos receives the summer west to northwest Meltemi surprisingly steadily despite its offshore angle. Water stays smooth across much of the wide bay; wind strengthens further at the western end. In strong wind launching near shore can work, while on lighter days the more reliable wind is farther out. South to southwest wind is rare and brings waves. Because the Meltemi is offshore, riders should plan their return beforehand and, if unsure, use one of the staffed centres with a rescue boat.
More spot information
In summer, west to northwest wind works best. At the western end of the bay funnelling can greatly strengthen it; farther out it is steadier. The angle is offshore. Rare south to southwest conditions are also rideable and build waves.
In west to northwest wind the large bay stays mostly smooth and suits blasting, gybing and freestyle. South to southwest wind brings a considerably wavier surface.
The launch is in Kefalos Bay in southwest Kos. For the western funnelling area, use the marked access there; local windsurfing centres are the safe point of contact for return and rescue information.
West to northwest wind can blow offshore and quickly leave the shore behind. Assess wind strength and the return route before launching; wind increases in the western funnelling area. Rare south to southwest conditions bring waves.
