Spot description
Kalafatis is Mykonos' main windsurfing bay, with a professional centre on the long sandy beach. The Meltemi can become strong and sometimes gusty; beginners find easier conditions directly in the school's wind shadow. Farther out there are flat speed areas, chop and small waves.
More spot information
The northerly Meltemi is amplified by the bay's position and can reach strong-wind levels. N to NW is the relevant wind window. There is a small wind shadow directly at the school launch; beside it the wind can arrive offshore and gusty.
Sandy launch with flat water in the teaching area. Farther out, smooth speed zones alternate with chop and small waves; two rocks at the “Sleeping Man” are marked with buoys in summer.
The launch is on Kalafatis' sandy beach at the windsurfing centre on the bay's east side. Do not launch at the southern end by Agia Anna or in the marked reef area.
The windsurfing centre offers lessons, rental, repairs and equipment. The beach also has seasonal places to eat, toilets and parking.
The northerly Meltemi strengthens locally and can be gusty and offshore. The “Sleeping Man” rocks lie partly just below the surface and are marked in summer; keep swimming and teaching areas clear.
