Spot description
Elounda's coast lies in an indented bay north of Agios Nikolaos. Water stays flatter along more sheltered shore sections, while northerly wind can create short chop in more exposed places. Mountains and bays make wind angle locally variable. When wind blows away from shore, a safe return must be possible; observe local swimming areas.
More spot information
In summer the Meltemi usually reaches Elounda from north to northwest but is weakened by the Spinalonga peninsula and terrain. A west to northwest thermal breeze can also build in the afternoon. Wind strength varies within the bay.
In sheltered areas behind Spinalonga the water usually stays flat to slightly choppy. The bottom alternates between sand and rocks, and depth is not uniform.
There are several beach accesses in Elounda town. Before launching, check the specific section and local swimming zones; Spinalonga lies off the bay entrance.
Many excursion boats travel to Spinalonga island in summer; keep navigation routes and swimming zones clear. Wind shadows and uneven gusts can vary within the bay.
