Spot description
Shallow lagoon areas lie between the coast of Crete and the island offshore. South of the swimming area the lagoon is used for windsurfing and kitesurfing; outside, the water is deeper and more exposed to waves. Northwest wind can blow sideshore across the launch. Swimmers, rocks and marked protected zones of the Natura 2000 area limit usable space.
More spot information
In summer, north to northwest wind brings the steadiest conditions over the lagoon. Northeast can be gusty. Other seasonal patterns can produce waves outside the shallow lagoon; wind and water conditions differ by beach section.
The lagoon offers shallow water for manoeuvres; outside there is chop and small to medium waves. Sandy patches alternate with rocks and reef sections. Watch for currents and rocks in the shallow passages.
In southwest Crete, around 75 km from Chania.
Many swimmers and prominent reefs/rocks; watch for currents. Do not remove plants, animals or sand in the protected Natura 2000 area and keep nesting areas clear.
