Spot description
Balos is a shallow sandy lagoon at Crete's northwest tip between Gramvousa and Cape Tigani. The lagoon is in a Natura 2000 protected area and very busy in summer. Access via a long gravel track followed by a walk, or by boat; check current access rules and protected areas before travelling.
More spot information
The lagoon is usable across a broad directional arc from south through west to north. Northwest is particularly effective on the exposed coast; effects differ between sheltered and exposed sides of the lagoon.
Very shallow, mostly sandy lagoon with sheltered areas. On the open northwest side wind can push chop into the bay; outside the lagoon water becomes deeper and more exposed.
At Crete's northwest tip, about 54 km from Chania and 16 km northwest of Kissamos. Access via a long stony track followed by a walk or by excursion boat; check current access and protected-area rules before travelling.
Sensitive protected lagoon area (Natura 2000) with heavy seasonal visitor numbers. Wind can whip up sand; observe local nature conservation, swimming and access regulations.
